Playlist: Tokyo Nights
There’s something magical about Japan. As we mentioned in our 2-week Japan itinerary, walking the streets of Tokyo made us feel like we were in Disneyland, but only in the best of ways. It’s pristine, quiet, and orderly, yet bustling, colorful, and chaotic all at the same time. There’s this surreal quality to it that makes you wonder if the whole thing is the Truman show.
At night, Tokyo takes on another form altogether — young people crowd into subway cars in the trendiest of outfits, the streets light up in giant animated billboards and multicolored neon signs as far as the eye can see, and every corner hides a hidden gem of a tiny bar spinning records or izakaya serving late night snacks.
With this playlist, we tried to capture tunes that bring us back to a night wandering the Tokyo streets — modern, hopeful, and somewhat surreal vibes. Featuring songs by Purity Ring (k, Ungirthed is probably Sam’s most played song ever), Grimes (really on a Grimes kick lately), M83 (for some reason their sound captures Tokyo to us), and oh yeah…we played Tokyo Nights by Digital Farm Animals every single day while in Japan, as evidenced by our Japan recap video.
Enjoy! Tell us your favorite tune, or any other jams you’d add to this playist in the comments!
